B8: Smart Home Technology: New Opportunities for Independent Living and Aging in Place

A growing number of companies now offer apps for your smart phone or tablet that are capable of managing an entire smart home. With voice, a swipe or a touch of a hand, people with disabilities and seniors can control thermostats, window coverings, lights, doors, pet feeders, medicine dispensers, and many other smart devices. This workshop will provide information and a demonstration – including “lessons learned” – about products that are being used to help people transition from nursing homes, seniors “age in place” and young adults create a “Home of Their Own.”

Moderator &  Speaker: Susan Tachau, Chief Executive Office, Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Foundation

Speakers: Michael Strawbridge, Community Computing Educator, Inglis; Kirby Smith, Founder & President, SunKirb Ideas, LLC; Diane Belnavis, Consultant, Smart Homes Made Simple
